LOCAL STORIES OCTOBER 27, 2022 Hidden Gems: Meet Ashley Moser of Next Steps Counseling and Consulting
Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Moser.
Hi Ashley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I find people fascinating! I have always been curious about why people act, think, and feel the way they do, and I believe I became a therapist because of that genuine interest. I pursued psychology as my undergraduate major at The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and sought a specialized program for graduate school in the marriage and family therapy program at Northwestern University. For the last 15 years, I have provided therapy in multiple settings, including outpatient, PHP/IOP, community mental health, and private practice. I spent eight years of my career in clinical and administrative leadership but felt a calling to return to direct service in response to the current mental health crisis. I opened a virtual private practice and have loved being able to directly contribute to the well-being of the people I have the privilege of supporting.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My path has truly been one of willingness to take risks. I did not set out with an initial end goal in mind and so I have said ‘yes’ to as many opportunities as I can, especially those that challenge and push me. As a result, I have developed skills beyond those of therapy, including public speaking, operations and leadership. Struggles naturally come with growing beyond our comfort zone and I have learned a lot about myself in the process.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Next Steps Counseling and Consulting?
Next Steps Counseling and Consulting is a virtual therapy practice serving residents of North Carolina, South Carolina and Illinois. With a focus on anxiety, life transitions, and women’s issues, I specialize in disordered eating, body image, and helping families support each other. My sessions are typically active, directive, and emotionally focused. I see tremendous value in the therapeutic relationship and view that as a true means to progress.
What are your plans for the future?
My practice opened its virtual doors in May 2022 which feels like a huge accomplishment in itself! My plans for the future include further establishing my practice within the community and assisting people in making a meaningful change that improves their quality of life.
